Based on its history of more than 40 years at the forefront of textile and keratin protein science, AgResearch has world class expertise in natural fibre manipulation and product development, which provides the expertise for textile preform manufacture for biocomposites. In addition AgResearch has substantial capability in the production of high value products from protein biopolymers, having created the commercial production process for its Keratec Ltd spin-off. Crop & Food Research is a New Zealand based biological science company that carries out both government-funded research and work for commercial clients. Its research is organised under five Centres of Innovation which build on its expertise in arable, vegetable, ornamental and seafood raw materials. One of its Centres of Innovation focuses on biopolymers and biomaterials: in this area the company is developing leading edge capabilities in the synthesis and application of new biopolymers with potential in cosmetics, medicines, adhesives, new industrial materials, advanced food materials, bioplastics and bioactive packaging. Formerly known as Forest Research, Scion is a New Zealand Crown Research Institute focused on applying a deep knowledge of plantation forestry, wood products and processing, and of fibre products such as paper and MDF, to the development of new biomaterials from renewable plant resources.

Scion’s international expertise in fibre refining, wood and fibre processing, and engineering, together with significant polymer science capabilities (for example in resin formulations for adhesives and coatings and in the processing and formulation of plastics and composite materials) are now being applied to innovative bio-plastic and biocomposite products.
